Five plant habits worth learning

Practical notes for taking the next sensible step.

01

Pothos

A flexible trailing plant that tolerates a range of indoor conditions. Give it indirect light and watch soil moisture rather than following a strict schedule.

02

Spider plant

Often grows well with bright indirect light. Browning tips can have several causes; avoid changing everything at once.

03

ZZ plant

Stores moisture in its rhizomes and generally prefers the mix to dry between waterings.

04

Peace lily

Its leaves often droop when thirsty, though repeated wilting is stressful. Give it filtered light and good drainage.

05

Snake plant

Adaptable and slow growing. A free-draining mix and restraint with watering are more helpful than frequent fussing.

06

Look at new growth

A new leaf or shoot is often a more useful indicator of present conditions than an old leaf damaged months ago.
